Suresh Shetty later spoke to press people at a press conference held at Circuit House, Mangalore. He said that the government of Maharashtra is ready to provide all medical requirements to the people. The government hospitals provided free treatment during the terrorist attacks. Even last year, during the terrorist attacks, the government provided free medical facilities in government hospitals. This year, some private hospitals are also providing free treatment. The state government will take care of all the expenses in such situations, he said.

Speaking about the medical facilities in Maharashtra, he said that, although the hospitals provide free treatment, they lack nurses, specialists, and doctors. The government now plans to recruit additional medical staff and also establish new nursing colleges to meet the demand for nurses.

He said that the demand for doctors, specialists, and nurses is high, but the number of qualified medical employees is low. The authorities concerned therefore have given advertisements for walk-in interviews. Moreover, steps have been taken to make appropriate changes in the medical syllabi. The current medical course, which lasts about 7 years, is a bit too long; and this is one of the factors responsible for the shortage of doctors. Memorandums have been submitted to make the required changes to the medical course and to shorten its duration. This will lead to a rise in the number of doctors and nurses.

He said that the government would not support Shiva Sene in any way. Indians have the fundamental right to migrate from one state to the other and nobody can take this fundamental right away from them. However, every Indian must respect the other’s culture, traditions, and way of life, he said.
