Major fire mishap in Punacha telephone exchange, 3 other shops

Bantwal, May 3, 2013: A telephone exchange and three other shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out at Punacha in Bantwal taluk in the early hours of May 2, Thursday.
Reports said various equipment at the telephone exchange worth Rs 75 lakh were gutted in the fire in the building named ‘Honest’ owed by UT Moosa Kunhi. Lisa Fancy owned by Thomas D’Souza, Anushree Home Products and Caterers and Jalalliya Hotel too suffered losses. It is learnt two LPG cylinders inside the catering firm also exploded due to the impact of the fire, resulting in heavy damages. The total loss suffered by the three shops has been estimated at over Rs 3.5 lakhs.
The fire was first noticed by Timmanna the watchman of the Telephone Exchange who went around to see after he heard a loud noise from inside the building. The fire service personnel had to battle for several hours to put out the fire.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
