Mangalore, 12: “Using children for labour hinders social progress,” said Commissioner of Mangalore City Police Seemanth Kumar Singh, adding that forcing children below the age of 14 is not only crime, but also inhuman during his inaugural address on the occasion of World Anti Child Labour Day held at St. Aloysius High School on June 12, Saturday. Mr. Singh declared that society is responsible for sending children to school.
Continuing his condemnation of child labour, the commissioner urged people to refuse to purchase the products of companies that hire children. He said a person who purchases such products is indirectly supporting child labour.
Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Dr K. N. Vijayaprakash, the chief guest of the event, said that the present social and economic system has actually contributed to the problem of child labour.
District and Sessions Courts Judge H. R. Deshpande presided over the programme. M. Purushottam Bhat was the resource person. Labour Officer Gopal Gowda made the welcome speech. Inspector K. S. Satyanarayan Rao proposed the vote of thanks.
Civil Judge R. V. Patil, Assistant Labour Commissioner Venkatesh Appayya Sindhi Hatti, and Deputy Director of Education Department Chame Gowda attended the programme.
