Malpe: Fishing boat docked at the Baputhota fishing harbor gutted in fire

Malpe, February 20, 2025: A fishing boat docked near the bridge at the Baputhota fishing harbor caught fire late Wednesday night, resulting in the complete destruction of the vessel.

The boat, named Raviprakash, belonged to Janardhan T. Kanchan of Malpe. Fortunately, local fishermen noticed the fire in time and alerted authorities, preventing a major disaster. The boat had been anchored at the dock after the fishermen had returned from their fishing trip.

Local residents and the fire department responded quickly and managed to extinguish the fire. Although there were about 25 to 30 boats docked nearby, none of them caught fire due to the sea waves keeping the flames from spreading.

The damaged boat contained fishing nets, 200 liters of diesel, a GPS system, a fish finder, life jackets, a water tanker, and storage boxes. The estimated loss from the fire is around ₹15 lakh.
