Man arrested for theft; jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh recovered

Mangaluru, September 18, 2024: Kankanady police have arrested an accused wanted in the case of theft that took place in a house at Kulshekhar two years ago.

The arrested man is Rohith Mathias of Belman in Karkala. Police have recovered Rs 7 lakh worth jewels from him. The accused had fled to Mumbai after committing the crime.

Rohith who stayed with a woman at Kulshekhar had in December 2021 escaped from the house with cash and gold. A complaint was lodged at Kankanady police station.

Rohith is also an accused in the case of murdering retired PDO Bharathalakshmi who was his neighbour in Belman. Rohith had eyed the valuables which the woman had. He had dumped the body in a well. Rohith who was jailed in this case had come out on bail and had later absconded.

Police said he had the habit of befriending women of his community through social media and then escape with their valuables.
