Mangalore Jan 25, 2013 : Various programmes were organised in Mangalore on January 25, Friday as part of National Voters’ Day. Students formed a human chain while several teams rendered songs on voters’ rights.
A formal function held at Town Hall in this regard was inaugurated by Nitte University Vice Chancellor Dr K Shantharam Shetty.
In his address, Dr Shetty said India can be considered a true democratic nation only when it succeeds in solving several of its pressing problems.
He said even 62 years after independence, nearly 30 per cent of India’s population lived below poverty lines, while 20 per cent of its population comprised of illiterates. Attributing the lack of leadership to majority of problems, he said the nation needed not just good political leadership, but also leaders who can guide the society on the right direction.
Dr PL Dharma, Professor in Political Science, Mangalore University, delivered the key-note address. Deputy Commissioner N Prakash, Assistant Commissioner Dr MV Venkatesh, ZP Deputy Secretary Shivaramegowda, Additional DC KA Dayanand, K Harish Kumar, MCC Commissioner were also present.
