Mangalore, June 12: It was an exciting moment for Nagesh, a resident of Pandith House near Thokkottu, when he saw 9 Brahma Kamala flower bloomed in two earthen pots placed in front of his house. The night blooming cereus Epiphyllum oxypetalum is rare sight indeed. Many of his neighbors came to his house after hearing news of rthe are Brahma Kamala flower bloom.

Brahma kamala is identified as a flower from India. It blossoms during night time only .It has a breath taking fragrance. The plant belongs to the cactus family and said to be common in Himalayan region. Coses its petals by morning. Its scientific name is Epiphyllum oxypetalum. It is also called as ‘midnight flower’ or ‘Queen of the night’.

What makes it a rare occasion is the flowers bloom only once in a year and in the month of June and they survive only for a few hours. They start blooming only after sunset.


The beautiful flower, oozing with pleasing scent, has also attracted Ramachandra Bhat, a veteran photo journalist from Mangalore. He saw the rare flower on Saturday morning at 4 am, when he was moving towards city from his house on his daily duty.
