Unveiling the Plaque of the commissionarate Dr V S Achar, home minister, said that the city commissionerate, which has been a long time demand of the people of Mangalore and the government also felt the need to better the law and order situation in the city. It is the fourth Police commissionerate of the state and it will serve the people of this area in better efficient manner, he added.

Ajay Kumar Singh,  Director General of Police, handed over the charge of Commissioner to Inspector General of Police (Western range) Gopal B Hosur on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, he lauded the efforts taken by IGP Hosur in controlling crime and maintaining law and order in Western range.

Mr. Hosur will hold charge until a “suitable and willing” officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police is found for the job, according to highly placed sources. The decision is learnt to have been taken at the last moment after two DIGs, K. Ramachandra Rao and J. Arun Chakravarthy, declined the post citing personal reasons.

Mr. Hosur was asked to take interim charge after intense deliberations at the highest level that continued past noon on Monday. Several names, including that of Superintendent of Police A.S. Rao, were considered, the sources said.

As Police Commissioner, Mr. Hosur will have powers that are otherwise held by the Deputy Commissioner of the district. In another unexpected move, the Government has decided to leave Mulky and Moodbidri out of the purview of the new Comissionerate. It was believed until the very end that the Home Department would succumb to pressure from local BJP leaders, who wanted Mulky and Moodbidri to be added to the new Commissionerate. Mr. Acharya is said to have conveyed that Mulky would be added in future, but not Moodbidri.

Mr. Hosur joined the police force in 1980 as a Karnataka State Police Service officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police. He was later upgraded to the IPS cadre. He took over as Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) on February 18, 2009 and is in charge of Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada and Chickmagalur districts and heads the Anti-Naxal Force.
