Mangalore, Jan 9, 2013: “It has been two months since Sowjanya was raped and murdered and all that the police have done so far is to arrest a mentally ill man. This reveals how the police department is shrugging off its responsibilities,” alleged Nithin Kumar, District President of SFI.
He was speaking at a protest organized by the Students Federation of India (SFI) in front of the DC office in Mangalore on January 9, Wednesday, demanding a CBI probe into the Sowjanya case.
Continuing, Nitin said the student community is having a sense of insecurity and feel highly unsafe while returning home after classes in the evening. He blamed the inefficiency of the police department for the rising cases of violence against students.
Dhanalakshmi, a student leader said female students are always at risk of being harassed both within and outside campuses. Pointing out to the over 50 cases of sexual harassment of girls in the district, she said freedom has become a mirage.
Razak Montepadavu, District Secretary of SFI urged for a re-probe into Sowjanya case.
He said the SFI will hold a signature collection drive and collect over 10,000 signatures and send the same to authorities concerned.
