Mangalore, Feb 22, 2012: Mangalore University will confer the Honoris Causa on 3 people on the occasion of its 30th annual convocation, which will be held on Feb 23 Thursday in Mangala Auditorium.
Speaking about the event at a press conference held in Ravindra Kalabhavana, University College on Feb 22 Wednesday, T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, the vice chancellor of the university, said that Dr. Srikumar Banerjee, the nuclear scientist; Govinda Rao Marapalli, the economist, and Yerya Laxminarayana Alva, the senior Kannada litterateur will receive the Honoris Causa from Governor H. R. Bharadwaj.
He also said that the university will award 44 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, including 13 for Arts, 26 for Science, and 5 for Commerce, and 17 Master of Philosophy Degrees, including 1 for Arts, 9 for Science, and 7 for Commerce. Besides, 567 cash prizes and 35 gold medals will be given away. There are 62 ranks in all, including 44 in PG, 18 in UG, 12 in Arts, 33 in Science and Technology, 9 in Commerce, 3 in Law, and 2 in PG Diploma, he said.
Further, he said that, of the 26,222 candidates appearing for the examinations in 2010 – 11, 17,271 (65.86 percent) have passed. For PG courses, of the 2,984 candidates who appeared, 2,732 (91.56 percent) have passed, and out of the 23,154 UG students who appeared, 14,460 (62.45 percent) have passed, and out of the 23 PG Diploma students who wrote their exams, 18 (78.26 percent) have passed.
Of the 2,732 students who passed, there were 1079 (39.49 percent) boys and 1653 (60.51 percent) girls. Of the 14,460 UG candidates who passed, there were 5,170 (35.75 percent) boys and 9290 (64.25 percent) girls. Of the 118 PG Diploma students who passed, 3 (16.67 percent) were boys and 15 (83.33 percent) were girls.
Of the total number of 17,271 candidates who passed, 6,288 (36.41 percent) were boys and 10,983 (63.59 percent) were girls.
The VC also said that Dr. Srikumar Banerjee will inaugurate the Centre for Application of Radioisotopes and Radiation Technology (CARRT) in the university. He would preside over this event, he added.
