Mangalore bids farewell to Kaveriappa.Master plan 2020 unveiled

Mangalore, Jan 23: The Civic Reception Committee of Mangalore offered a public felicitation to former Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof Kandattanda Monnappa Kaveriappa and his wife Brinda at Town Hall in the City on Saturday. Prof Kaveriappa retired from his post last month.
   

The speakers at the ceremony lauded the contributions of the academician to the field of higher education and Mangalore University. The former VC has served in the varsity for about 30 years in different capacities.

Nitte University Vice Chancellor Dr M Shantharam Shetty said, by felicitating Prof Kaveriappa the public of Mangalore are honouring the growth and vibrancy of higher education system in the region, and the values left behind by him as an able teacher, administrator, organiser and a human being.

Appreciating the professor’s simplicity and humbleness, Dr Shetty termed him “a vice-chancellor of people”.

Inspector General of Police (Western Range) B Gopal Hosur said, Prof Kaveriappa never attracted any controversy though he was holding a top position. The IGP wished that a Chair for Law and Order Studies should be established in the varsity.
Comparing Prof Kaveriappa to river Cauvery, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said: “Just like river Cauvery, the professor has made the field of higher education fertile.”

Mayor M Shankar Bhat recalled the developmental works taken up in Mangalagangothri during Kaveriappa’s term as VC. MLA U T Khader said Prof Kaveriappa should be made the head of a Knowledge Authority when Mangalore, a hub of education, is declared a “knowledge city”. Mentioning the students’ protest going on at the university, he appealed the university authorities to listen to the woes of the protesters and find a solution to the imbroglio at the earliest.

In his response to the felicitation, Prof Kaveriappa said he was blessed to work with Mangalore University for such a long period. “The number of degree and other professional colleges in the undivided DK district is much higher than the national average. This is the ‘kaashi’ of higher education in true terms. I was blessed to work with such an organisation. In the meantime, I got an opportunity to develop the institution which I consider my alma mater,” he observed.

Contributing to “the expansion and inclusion” of higher education, a total of 60 new degree colleges have been opened, while the total intake has increased to 55,000. A total of 9 PG courses and 10 correspondence courses have been initiated newly, he said.

A new masterplan for Mangalore University was unveiled during the programme. In-charge Vice Chancellor Prof K K Achary, the programme conveners P Dayanand Pai, K Thejomaya, P V Mohan, UltraTech Senior Vice President Ramachandra and Registrar Prof K Chinnappa Gowda were present on the occasion.
