Mangalore boy selected for international chess event Mangalore, November 19: Arjun Adappa, a Class 7 student in Lourdes Central School, will be among those representing Chess Association of India (CAI) in a yet to be announced international event in 2011 said Chess association Joint Secretary Prasanna Rao.


Arjun Adappa received the second runner-up trophy with a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 in the under-12 category of the first CAI national age group championship held in Chinchwad, Pune, which concluded on November 14.


CAI had announced that all three toppers would get an opportunity to represent it in one international event next year.


Arjun was Derik’s Chess School talent. The administrator of the city-based school Deric Pinto said in a statement that Arjun Adappa scored six points in eight rounds.


He scored five wins, two draws and lost one game.

The event was organised by Pimpri Chinchwad Mahanagar Chess Association on behalf of Chess Association of Maharashtra under the aegis of CAI.


Another DCS talent, Dhrikshu Vasanth, Class 6 student of Lourdes Central School, scored 5.5 points in the same category and was placed in sixth position.


Mr. Rao said a few more students of the Deril’s Chess School, who participated in the recent National Chess Championships, brought laurels to the State and the city with their performance.


In the National School Games Chess Championship held in Goa from November 10 to 14, Vanessa D’Souza, a Class 10 student of St. Agnes Girls High School, scored all wins to help the Karnataka under-17 girls’ team to clinch the silver medal. She won the individual board prize.


Pangal Goipalakrishna Nayak of the chess school won the Silver Medal representing Karnataka under-14 boys’ team.


He is Class 7 student of Canara Urwa High School. Andria D’souza of St. Agnes English Primary School won the bronze medal representing Karnataka under-14 girls’ team while Nihal Manjunath, first year PUC student of St. Aloysius PU College won the bronze medal representing Karnataka under-19 boys’ team.
