Mangaluru, June 21, 2023: Mangalore buns, bread-jam, ragi mudde (ragi balls) with soppu saru (mixed greens curry) have been added to the existing menu of Karnataka’s state-run Indira canteens, officials said. Acting on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s order to revamp the canteen service, new items have been added to the menu.
Khara pongal (rice and spicy lentil porridge), vegetable pulav, bisibelebath (hot lentil with boiled rice), tea and coffee have been added to the menu.
Indira canteens were started in 2017, during Siddaramaiah’s first tenure as the chief minister of Karnataka. It was known for providing breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a subsidised rate for the state’s working class.
As per officials, the canteen is undergoing a massive revamp, with cleanliness and food quality being the top priorities.
Earlier on June 12, the chief minister announced the setting up of 250 Indira Canteens across Bengaluru.
“Previously, the city corporation covered 70 per cent of the costs, while the government covered the remaining 30 per cent. However, going forward, both entities will bear an equal 50 per cent share,” Siddaramaiah had said.
New tenders would be issued, he said, and emphasised the importance of ensuring quantity, quality, and cleanliness.
