Mangalore gets highest rainfall of 93mm

Mangalore, Aug 13, 2012 : The twin districts of DK and Udupi saw a decline in rainfall on August 12, Sunday. During the last 24-hour period, Mangalore received the highest rainfall of 93mm, followed by Kadaba (80mm), Bantwal (79.6mm), Puttur (77.4mm), Moodubidri (71.2mm), Sullia (65.4mm), and Belthangady (59.2mm).

Surathkal was hit by artificial floods on Sunday, and a house was partly damaged in Ajjavara, Sullia. The rains also led to the collapse of two compound walls in Puttur, besides, two more houses have been partially damaged.

The district administration launched a gruel centre in Panja Government School for around 32 families that took shelter in the school after their houses were hit by floods in Ulya. Many of them, however, did not stay in the gruel centre. Speaking about his experiences, seventy-year-old Jarappa said that the local people used a boat to rescue people from the flood, adding that it was Jarandaya Daiva who saved their lives.

MLA Abhayachandra Jain distributed 10kg rice bags among the 32 families.

Meanwhile, Udupi recorded rainfall of 100.86mm during the last 24-hour period while Kundapur recorded 121.6mm, Karkala recorded 87.6mm, and Udupi recorded 93.4mm.

Several areas in Kundapur were submerged in water because of the continuous rains during the last 3 – 4 days. In Malyadi in Thekatte, a house was partially damaged. In Beejady, a government school was flooded with water. In Nilayaramane, a house was submerged.

The major rivers of the taluk are flowing below the danger level.

In Udupi, a cattle shed belonging to Babanna Poojary of Kotathattu was damaged, a house belonging to Baghi Poojarthy of Padukere collapsed, and a house belonging to Girija Poojarthy of Manoor was damaged. The compound wall of Sanskrit College in Moodaneedamburu collapsed because of heavy rain, and a house belonging to Kalu Harijana in Siriyara was partially damaged.

The taluk office in Karkala reports that the rains have not caused any damage in the taluk, but a lot of water had collected in front of Shri Mahalingeshwara Temple in Padubidri and shops were submerged at Bantara Bhavana beside NGH66 in Padubidri.

According to the tahsildar of Baindur, 30 – 40 houses in Badakere, Navunda were submerged in water, but people had to be rescued with the help of boats.

Uppunda is experiencing severe sea erosion, and over 70 coconut trees have been uprooted for the past 4 days because of sea erosion.
