Mangalore, Sep 9, 2013: Except for some concretized roads, most of the roads in Mangalore are in bad shape. Dotted with potholes they are a veritable death trap for motorists.
Now that rains have subsided, the Mangalore City Corporation ought to think in terms of taking steps to repair the roads or at least do some patch works. But, as of now, the MCC seems to be not having any such plan.
According to MCC officials, the City Corporation is yet to finalize the cost estimates for the first phase of pothole filling. It is only after the proposals are made and budget estimates fixed that tenders can be invited.
Meanwhile, an engineer even points out that usually contractors show least interest in taking up such pothole filling work as the government estimates are far much below the actual expenditure on such works.
The fact is that despite repeated patch works over the years, potholes continue to appear on the roads. Giving an explanation for the same, an MCC official admitted poor quality of work and also the pressure from corporators to expedite works in their respective wards. Even the fund allocation is insufficient, he adds. The result is that there will be hairline fractures and during rains the percolated water seeps into the area ultimately making the pothole reappear at the same spot, he further states.
