Mangaluru, July 04 2018: City’s immensely talented chess player, eight year old Shriyana Mallya has made everyone proud by winning the ‘Commonwealth Chess Championship 2018’ title in the under 8 girls’ category.
The event held at the Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, Delhi concluded on July 3. Shriyana is a student of Lourdes Central School and is the proud daughter of Sandeep and Nandini Mallya from Hoigebazar.
A total of four players had scored six points at the end of the penultimate round and Shriyana with 5 wins and two draws was declared the winner. Another participant from Karnataka, Sri Harini won the fourth place. There were a total 40 participants in the under-8 event and Shriyana was ranked 16th at the start of the event.
The championship saw contestants not only from India but also from Pakistan, Srilanka, Kenya, Australia, Uganda and other countries.
Shriyana had earlier won the bronze medals in the world school chess championship and Blitz tournament held in Lasi, Romania in April last year. This April, the Indian team of which she was part of had won bronze in the under eight category in the Asian school chess championship held in Thailand.
Shriyana was the national school chess champion as well as Karnataka state chess champion in the under-7 girls’ age category. She was coached by Gahan M G and Sameer Ghotane of Chess SaGa, Bengaluru.
