Mangaluru Apr 14, 2016: District Administration, Mangalore City Corporation and Social Welfare Department jointly celebrated the 125th birth anniversary of Dr.B.R.Ambedkar at Town Hall on Thursday April 14.
District in-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai and other dignitaries garlanded the portrait of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar and paid their respects to the great leader.
Speaking on the occasion, B Ramanath Rai recalled the early days when society was biased on the basis of caste and creed and people belonging to downtrodden sections were deprived of land and other amenities. Today things have changed and people able to acquire land under several schemes, he said.
He also explained how Ambedkar had struggled to eradicate the practice of untouchability and also to end caste based discrimination in the society.
On the Ambedkar Bhavan project in the district, Rai said the cabinet had sanctioned funds for the same after a long run discussion.
State Health Minister U.T.Khader said it is the utmost duty of each and every citizen to respect and protect the constitution of the nation. Today, a strong message needs to be conveyed to the society to maintain peace and harmony rather than judging an individual through the associations he is affiliated to.
Prior to the programme, a procession which was flagged off by Mayor Harinath proceeded from Ambedkar Circle to Town Hall.
