Mangaluru, May 7, 2023: Leader of opposition in the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council, Naveen D’Souza, said that the mismanagement of the BJP administration has led to the drinking water crisis in the city.

D’Souza told reporters here on Friday, that the BJP-led administration in the MCC failed to take precautionary measures well in advance, to tide over the water crisis. The officials of the MCC have delayed the implementation of water rationing. Though the water level in Thumbe dam of the city corporation was depleting fast due to lack of pre-monsoon rain, officials failed to hold a meeting and take a decision, he said.

“The district administration and MCC should have introduced water supply rationing from mid-April, and should have asked the private company to stop generation of electricity from AMR dam in December itself. The MCC took a decision to commence rationing water, only after the situation worsened,” D’Souza said.

When the Congress was in power in the MCC, people were getting 24,000 litres water at a minimum price of Rs 65 per month. However, the BJP has reduced the quantity of water to 8,000 litres. The water tariff has been reduced by the ruling BJP, only for a year, from August 1, 2022, keeping in mind the election. The revision of water tariff was only an election gimmick for votes, he said, and added that the Jalasiri scheme to ensure 24x7 drinking water supply, was sanctioned for the city when JR Lobo was the MLA of the Mangaluru City South constituency.
