Mangaluru, March 9, 2025: Reshma Shetty and Girish Shetty, natives of Mangaluru, have become the first Indian couple to run from Mumbai to Mangaluru, covering 947 km in 23 days. The endurance run concluded at Mangala Stadium on Saturday.
The couple, who began their journey on February 14, plan to register their achievement with the Guinness Book of Records. They were given a rousing welcome and later felicitated at ’Shourya,’ an event organized by Tapasya in collaboration with Lions Club International, IDFC First Bank, BANMS Mangaluru Taluk Samithi Mahila Ghataka, at Town Hall.
Inspired by a video by Tapasya Trustee Naveenchandra Hegde on raising funds for a palliative care center for terminally ill cancer patients, Reshma and Girish undertook the grueling journey. They ran 42.195 km daily, starting at 4:20 am and ending by noon, despite challenges like heat and limited facilities in the ghats.
Reshma, a General Manager at Jio, described the run as a tribute from "Karma Bhoomi to Janma Bhoomi," raising awareness about childhood cancer being curable. Along the route, they also conducted awareness sessions at banks, colleges, and community organizations.
Since 2018, the couple has participated in over 30 marathons, 50 half-marathons, and 15 ultra-marathons under the guidance of trainers Haridasan Nair and Kumar Ajwani.
The felicitation ceremony was attended by MLA D Vedavyas Kamath, District Governor Bharathi BM, and other dignitaries. Reshma attributed their injury-free run to the blessings of ’Kateel Appe’ and the encouragement of family and Tapasya founder Sabitha R Shetty.
