Mangaluru, February 10, 2025: A team of cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons (CTVS) of Government Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru on Sunday removed a huge wooden piece measuring 20 cm long and a broken steel chain from the neck of a 12-year-old boy by performing a surgery.

District Surgeon and Superintendent of the hospital D.S. Shivaprakash said in a statement that the boy who hailed from Assam and lived with his parents in a tea estate in Madikeri. He suffered severe injury following a fall from a coconut tree on Saturday evening. A wooden piece and a broken steel chain entered his neck and lodged in the chest. The incident occurred at around 7.30 p.m. on Saturday and he was brought to the hospital at around 12.15 a.m. on Sunday.

The team led by Dr. Suresh Pai performed the life-saving surgery on the boy between 1.30 a.m. and 3.30 a.m. and removed the wooden piece and the broken chain.

“We salute the entire CTVS team, operation theatre staff, and anesthesia team for their remarkable efforts in saving a young life,” Dr. Shivaprakash said. The boy is recovering and he is in the intensive care unit, Dr. Shivaprakash added.
