Mangaluru: IMA stages protest condemning brutal murder of lady doctor in Kolkata

Mangaluru, August 16, 2024: The Dakshina Kannada branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) held a protest and candlelight vigil on August 13, 2024, at 6:30 PM in front of their office premises, condemning the horrific rape and brutal murder of a lady doctor at Government R.J. Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata. The incident, which occurred while the doctor was performing her routine night duty, has sent shockwaves through the medical fraternity across the country.

Led by IMA Mangaluru Branch President Dr. Ranjan R.K., the protest featured a candlelight march and the formation of a human chain as symbols of solidarity and mourning. The event was attended by key members of the IMA, including Secretary Dr. Avin Alva, Treasurer Dr. Prashanth, President-Elect Dr. Jassy Marry D’Souza, Vice President Dr. Mahabalesh Shetty, and several past presidents, including Dr. M.V. Prabhu, Dr. K.R. Kamath, and Dr. Annayya Kulal. IMA Trust President Dr. Divakar Rao and IMA Lady Wing President Dr. Prabha Adhikari also participated in the protest.

Approximately 400 doctors joined the demonstration, demanding enhanced safety and security measures for medical professionals across the country. The protest aimed to draw the attention of the government to the urgent need for protecting healthcare workers and ensuring justice for the victim’s family.

The presence of senior doctors and IMA officials underscored the medical community’s strong condemnation of the inhumane act and highlighted the need for improved law enforcement to safeguard those serving in the medical field. The protesters called for stringent punishment for the perpetrators and reinforced the need for systemic changes to prevent such tragedies in the future.
