Mangaluru: MCC sets new record with ₹138.2 crore property tax collection, exceeds target

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, April 13, 2025: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has achieved a significant milestone in property tax collection for the 2024–25 financial year. It has collected ₹138.2 crore, surpassing the government-set target of ₹114 crore. This marks an excess collection of ₹23.2 crore. Notably, ₹37.2 crore was collected in just the last 45 days, according to officials.

MCC has around 2.16 lakh property owners under its jurisdiction. In the previous financial year (2023–24), it had collected ₹117 crore. This year, through continuous efforts and various awareness campaigns, officials not only met the target but exceeded it by ₹23.2 crore.

Despite the impressive collection, a substantial amount remains unpaid due to technical and other issues. Many property owners have not yet transitioned to the e-khata system, and their tax dues are still pending. As per current data, around 28,000 to 30,000 property owners have yet to pay their dues.

The city corporation has not conducted a comprehensive property survey in recent years. As per government guidelines, there is a mandatory 3% annual increase in property tax. Several long-standing commercial establishments are reportedly not paying the correct amount of tax, and notices have been issued to them. Officials have warned that legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply.

This achievement is credited to the continuous efforts of the revenue department under the leadership of the Commissioner. Taxpayers are encouraged to make their payments in April to avail exemptions. Advance payments can be made through http://www.mccproperty.in. Around 10–15% of taxpayers have not used the online system and are advised to visit the MCC office for information and payment, said Akshatha K, Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue Department.

The Three Campaigns Behind This Success:

Self-Declared Property Tax Awareness Campaign:

By February, MCC had collected ₹101 crore. To collect the remaining ₹14 crore, mobile vans were deployed across all 60 wards to raise awareness. This campaign yielded positive results.

Telephone-Based Awareness Campaign:

In partnership with the Smart City project, MCC created lists of pending taxpayers and launched a campaign involving direct phone calls and mass messaging. Pamphlets were also distributed, and revenue officers followed up at the ward level.

5% Rebate Incentive:

To encourage timely payments, MCC waived penalties and offered a 5% discount to those who paid their taxes in advance.
