Mangaluru: Man sentenced to 5 years for sexual assault on minor

Mangaluru, March 5, 2025: A 43-year-old man was sentenced to five years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 20,000 for sexually assaulting a minor girl.

The convicted individual, Asif (43), a resident of Kesargadde, Padumarnadu, Moodbidri, was found guilty of the crime that took place on February 10, 2019.

Case details:

The victim, a Class 10 student, was waiting with a friend after a special class at a high school near Marpadi Jainpete when her mother asked a neighboring youth to pick her up on a bike. As they were about to leave, Asif, who is also a distant relative of the girl, stopped her and questioned why she was accompanying someone from a different religion. He then slapped her, humiliated her, sexually harassed her, and physically assaulted the youth who had come to pick her up.

Following the incident, a case was registered at Moodbidri police station, and then-Inspector Dejappa filed the charge sheet.

After a thorough trial, Judge Vijay Devaraj found Asif guilty and sentenced him to:

* 5 years of simple imprisonment and a Rs 10,000 fine (with an additional 3-month imprisonment in case of non-payment).
* 1 year of simple imprisonment.
* 3 years of simple imprisonment and another Rs10,000 fine.

The court also directed that of the total Rs 20,000 fine, Rs 10,000 be provided as compensation to the victim. Additionally, the court directed the Legal Services Authority to grant Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the minor victim.

Special Public Prosecutor Sahana Devi Boloor represented the victim.
