Mangaluru: Overnight removal of Hampankatta bus shelter removal sparks student outrage

Mangaluru, Sept 15, 2024: The sudden overnight removal of the Hampankatta bus shelter, used by thousands of students, has sparked outrage among the student community in Mangaluru. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), advocating for the shelter’s reconstruction, has issued a 10-day ultimatum to the district administration and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), threatening protests if their demands are not met.

Shreyas Idyakda, ABVP’s Mangaluru taluk sanchalak, stated that the shelter, which protects students from various colleges and schools in the area from rain and heat, was cleared a month ago. MCC officials reportedly removed the shelter due to complaints from a local shopkeeper claiming it affected their business, a justification ABVP finds unacceptable.

ABVP members protested on September 11, prompting Mangaluru taluk tahsildar Prashant V Patil to visit the site and promise a swift decision. "We will protest again if no decision is made within 10 days," Shreyas warned, emphasizing the need to rebuild the shelter. MCC has defended the removal, calling the structure "unscientific."
