Mangaluru, Jan 12, 2025: Mangaluru could soon host an energy security summit, leveraging its position as a hub of energy production along the Karnataka coast, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Saturday.

Speaking at the Mangaluru Literature Festival during a session on “Energy for Survival: Security and Climate Debate,” Mr. Puri responded to a question by author Harsha Bhat on taking energy summits beyond major metropolitan cities. He encouraged local MP Captain Brijesh Chowta to spearhead the initiative, assuring full support from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

“We can easily make this happen. My Hon’ble friend and Member of Parliament met with all the oil marketing companies yesterday. If you want to organize an energy security event here, go ahead and discuss it with them. I will support it,” Mr. Puri said.

Ms. Bhat emphasized the need to explore the potential of smaller cities for hosting such significant events. Mr. Puri highlighted ongoing efforts by the Ministry to expand energy-related platforms, including the establishment of a permanent exhibition and conference facility in Goa on a 240-acre ONGC plot.

“We are building a massive conference facility, akin to Bharat Mandapam and YashoBhoomi in Delhi, to enable global entities to host their events. After successful energy weeks in Bengaluru and Goa, this will be another milestone,” he added.

The Minister also invited public participation in the upcoming India Energy Week in New Delhi, scheduled for next month. For the first time, the month-long event will be open daily to the public, with a focus on engaging youth, a move championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“India Energy Week, launched three years ago, is now the largest energy show in the world. Unlike others that focus solely on fossil fuels, this event integrates technology, start-ups, and other components of the energy ecosystem. I encourage everyone, especially young people, to explore what’s on offer and witness the remarkable progress our country has made,” Mr. Puri said.

The proposal to host an energy security summit in Mangaluru reflects the city’s growing prominence in India’s energy sector and its potential to serve as a platform for discussions on sustainable and secure energy solutions.
