Mangaluru: Three students drown at Hosabettu beach

Mangaluru, January 9, 2025: Three engineering students tragically drowned at Hosabettu beach on Wednesday despite warnings from local fishermen, while one individual was successfully rescued.

The incident occurred around 2 pm, according to Mahesh Prasad, Inspector of the Surathkal police station. “The local fishermen had cautioned the group against entering the water due to its depth, but the warnings were ignored. When the group began to struggle in the strong currents, the fishermen managed to save one person,” he said.

The deceased have been identified as Manjunath S (31) from Upparigenahalli in Chitradurga district, Shivakumar (30) from Shivamogga, and Satyavelu (30) from JP Nagar, Bengaluru. Parameshwar (30), from Hangarga in Bidar district, was rescued by the fishermen.

The bodies of Shivakumar, Satyavelu, and Manjunath were recovered near the right side of the Kulai jetty and sent to AJ Hospital in Mangaluru for post-mortem examinations before being handed over to their families.

Inspector Prasad explained that the four students, from AMC Engineering College in Bengaluru, had left for Mangaluru on Tuesday night and arrived on Wednesday morning. After having breakfast at a local hotel, they visited the Kulai jetty near Hosabettu beach. While playing in the water, they were caught in the strong currents.

A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
