Mangaluru blast suspect visited Udupi Temple and Madurai

Mangaluru, Nov 27, 2022: Mangaluru police found that the mastermind of Mangaluru autorickshaw blast Mohammed Shariq had visited Udupi Krishna Math on October 11 and Madurai in September.

The police got a clue through a phone call made from Shariq’s mobile phone whose location was traced to Car Street in Udupi. Mangaluru police have visited the Math and have collected the CCTV visuals.

A special team of Mangaluru police also carried out searches in the lodges on Madurai city on Friday and Saturday where H Mohammed Shariq is believed to have stayed for a day in September. Mangaluru city police commissioner N Shashi Kumar said the suspect Shariq might have stayed in Tamil Nadu for around 8-10 days.

With the help of Madurai city police, the Mangaluru team searched lodges and mansions on Town Hall Road and Katrapalayam too and checked their visitors’ register. They had collected the tower dump of the mobile number used by Shariq and come to know that he had stayed in a mansion at Gandhipuram in Coimbatore city for three days. He travelled to Singanallur from there and to Madurai on a bus. He stayed for a day in Madurai and later travelled by bus to Nagercoil where he stayed for two days. He is believed to have met a few people at the three locations.

"Our special teams have been camping in Tamil Nadu for the last four days and are trying to locate the places where Shariq stayed and travelled various places in Tamil Nadu," said  Shashi Kumar.

Meanwhile, police security has been tightened around the private hospital in Mangaluru where Mohammed Shariq is undergoing treatment. Shariq is monitored by a team of police and the doctors said he is responding well to the treatment. The police have installed a CCTV camera inside his ward. Hospital sources said that Shariq is still on a ventilator he is responding well to the treatment. Police Commissioner said the police have not yet been allowed to meet Shariq as he might catch an infection.
