Mangaluru, February 17, 2025: The Mangaluru city police collected ₹6.66 crore by imposing penalty for violating traffic rules in 2024. They have booked as many as 1.44 lakh cases of traffic violations last year.

In Mangaluru city three National Highways and State Highways criss-cross with city roads. On an average 166 persons die and 1,130 are injured in accidents every year in the city. With about four accidents every day, the city reports an average between 991 and 1,000 accidents every year. Nearly 76% of the fatalities are caused by pedestrians and motorcycle riders, said a recent report of Mangaluru City Police analysing traffic accidents in the city.

This indicates serious concern for public safety and need for enhanced enforcement rules, the report said.

As many as 16 ‘traffic’ black spots have been identified based on frequency of accidents. Targeted interventions are being done, including improved signages, road redesigning, and enhanced traffic law enforcement, it said.

Despite frequent accidents, people remain unaware of the actual statistics and impact of road accidents. Lack of awareness can contribute to complacency regarding road safety practices, the report said.

A total of seven highway patrolling vehicles have been deployed on the highways in the city police limits. The police patrol units are trained to take necessary measures by rushing to accident spots. Action is being taken against vehicles parked illegally on the road. These vehicles are removed to avoid congestion and ensuring unobstructed flow of traffic for emergency vehicles.

A detailed plan outlining junction improvement has been submitted by the police to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). The plan includes detailed strategies and expected outcomes. The police will work with National Highways Authority of India, State Highway department, Public Works Department, MCC, Mangaluru Smart City Ltd and Regional Transport Office for implementing the plan.

While making motorists aware of safe driving practices, the city police have conducted awareness programmes in schools and colleges to make children aware of traffic laws and safe road uses, the report stated.
