Mangaluru, March 31, 2025: Mangaluru District Prison should be shifted at the earliest to its new premises near Cheluru village of Bantwal taluk, to address the mobile network problem being faced by residents in Kodialbail area due to 5G mobile jammers installed the prison located in the heart of the city, said MLC Ivan D’Souza in Mangaluru on Saturday.
Talking to reporters, Mr. D’Souza said the new highly secured district prison building near Bantwal has been constructed at a cost of ₹ 110 crore. The new prison has the capacity to accommodate over 1,000 inmates. The compound wall for this new building has been constructed at a cost of ₹2.11 crore.
To the demand for ₹195 crore for building the quarters for prison staff under second phase of prison construction project, Mr. D’Souza said the government has assured of sanctioning the amount in the first meeting of the State Cabinet in April. Home Minister G. Parameshwara has said he will visit the new building at the earliest.
Complaints raised
Residents of Kodialbail and areas adjoining the District Prison are complaining about mobile network problems due to installing 5G mobile phone jammers. There are also security problems namely throwing of mobile phones and narcotic drugs to inmates by strangers standing outside the district prison.
“The structure of the new building is huge and is highly secure. It is imperative to shift the prison inmates to the new building by next month end,” Mr. D’Souza said.
The MLC said bids have been invited for constructing an electric crematorium at Nandigudde burial ground at a cost of ₹4 crore.
