Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s terms to end soon; Govt yet to announce reservations

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, September 2, 2024: The one-year terms of Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur and Deputy Mayor Sunitha end on September 7, but the state government has not yet announced reservations for the upcoming 25th term. Even if announced soon, the next mayor’s term will only last until February 2025, when the council’s five-year term ends, prompting new elections.

In the 2019 elections, the BJP won 44 out of 60 seats, the Congress secured 14, and the SDPI got two. Shashidhar Hegde, a senior Congress corporator, mentioned that the current mayor can remain in office if no reservation is announced. However, the four standing committees will be automatically dissolved after September 7.

Mayor Shetty, representing the Kodialbail ward, noted that he can continue to hold council meetings if reservations are not announced. The council was formed after the 2019 elections, with a series of mayors serving since then, including Diwakar Pandeshwar, Premanand Shetty, and Jayanand Anchan.
