Mangalore, Jan 5: The central government and the National Jute Board have jointly organized a jute fair, which comprises an exhibition and sale at Woodlands Auditorium on Jan 5, Wednesday.

Mayor Rajani Dugganna, who inaugurated the fair, said that a number of people are engaged in the jute business. Stating that jute products are eco-friendly, she urged people to avoid plastic and use more jute products.


Around 23 participants from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and other places are exhibiting their products at this 5-day fair.


National Jute Board Marketing Promotion Officer Mr. Ayyappan said that the participants are given stalls free of cost, adding that the board also intends to provide training programmes for those interested in the manufacture of jute. He informed that the National Jute Board is willing to train groups of 25 – 30 people with minimum tailoring qualifications in any state.


This is the second fair of its kind organized in Mangalore by the National Jute Board, and its purpose is to create awareness on eco friendly jute products among the city dwellers. A number of interesting products such as bags, bangles, purses, hair clips, chains, sandals, pencil boxes, mats, mobile covers and other products made of Kora leaves, elephant straw, straw fiber, jute, and banana fibres, costing anywhere between Rs 10 and Rs 1,500 are exhibited at the jute fair.
