Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar announces Rs 5 crore to combat sea erosion in Udupi district

Udupi, July 21, 2024: Udupi District In-Charge Minister and Minister for Women and Child Development, Lakshmi Hebbalkar, announced that steps are being taken to release Rs 5 crore to address sea erosion in the district. Reports of sea erosion have emerged from various parts of Udupi.

Speaking to the media after inspecting the sea erosion affected area at Gujjarabettu in Malpe and flood-affected areas in Udupi district on Sunday, she addressed the pending funds for anti-erosion works. “A proposal has been submitted to the government for the release of the pending amount. Steps have already been taken to mitigate sea erosion,” she stated.

Hebbalkar emphasized that the district administration has implemented precautionary measures to prevent loss of life due to floods and rain-related incidents. “We aim to ensure minimal inconvenience to people. In a recent meeting, I directed the forest department to trim branches of trees posing threats. The department has since taken steps to trim or fell such trees. Additionally, Mescom was instructed to fix dangling electricity wires and replace old poles that endangered residents,” she added.

To prevent road flooding, drains in Udupi town were cleaned. The district administration also set up helplines to address public grievances.

“I will visit all the rain-affected areas to assess the damage. Officials have been asked to submit reports on the losses incurred due to rain in the district. Compensation will be provided for property and crop losses,” Hebbalkar assured.

Udupi Deputy Commissioner Dr. K Vidyakumari, SP Dr. K Arun, ZP CEO Pratheek Bayal, and others were present during the inspections.
