Mangaluru, March 9, 2025: A 17-year-old PU student, who went missing from his home in Farangipete on February 25, was found in Udupi after 10 days of extensive search efforts. The student, Diganth, had left home due to fear of examinations, according to Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police (SP) Yathish N.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, SP Yathish revealed that Diganth, a PCMB student struggling with his studies despite scoring 80% in SSLC, had panicked over his lack of preparedness for the PU exams. He abandoned his slippers and mobile phone on a railway track near Arkula and embarked on a journey to escape his situation.
After walking along the railway tracks, Diganth hitchhiked to Mangaluru’s private bus stand, from where he traveled to Shivamogga by bus. His journey took him to Mysuru and later Kengeri, where he spent time at Nandi Hills, working at a resort to earn money. He then returned to Mysuru and eventually boarded the Murudeshwara Express train, disembarking in Udupi.
SP Yathish stated that Diganth’s presence in Udupi came to light after he attempted to leave a shopping center without paying, prompting the police to intervene. During questioning, Diganth mentioned noticing police combing operations near Farangipete while traveling on the train, suggesting he had been aware of the search efforts.
The SP dismissed allegations of kidnapping and clarified that the bloodstains found on Diganth’s abandoned slippers were self-inflicted due to a foot injury he sustained while leaving home.
In response to claims of police negligence, SP Yathish emphasized the department’s commitment to finding Diganth. "Seven teams were formed under the leadership of the DSP. Combing operations, canine squads, and drones were deployed. We took all possible measures, and there was no negligence on our part," he asserted.
Diganth’s case serves as a stark reminder of the psychological pressures faced by students, particularly during examination periods, SP Yathish added.
