Mangaluru, April 17, 2023: Murali M. Abbemane and Mariyam Rasheeda K.M. are the winners of the Dr. Krishi Photo Story Award 2022 of the ‘Under 30 Photo Story Contest’ organised by the Mangaluru Chapter of Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH) in association with Art Kanara Trust.

 

The results were announced during the inauguration of an exhibition of photo stories that were shortlisted for the award on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. at Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture, G. G. Road, Ballalbagh, Mangalore.

 

Pranam Shreedhar and Shravya Manjunath were the finalists. Likhith Raj Gatty and Sowjanya Jogi (joint project), Neel Kote and Vivek Gowda were the shortlisted contestants. The contest was announced in August 2022 and elicited 28 entries.

 

 

 

 

 

Eminent physician and writer Dr. B. Srinivas Kakkilaya, veteran photojournalist Yajna and advertising photographer and filmmaker Prakash Braggs, who was one of the jury members, were the dignitaries who graced the occasion. The other jury member, Babu Eshwar Prasad, a visual artist and filmmaker, could not attend the function.

 

 

Dr. B. Srinivas Kakkilaya released a book showcasing the shortlisted entries titled ‘Metaphors of Physical & Emotional Spaces’. The exhibition will be open to the public from April 16 through April 23, 2023, between 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at the same venue.

 

In his inaugural address, Dr. B. Srinivas Kakkilaya spoke about the friendship he shared with Dr. Krishna Mohan (Dr. Krishi). "Krishna Mohan was one of the first in Mangalore to explore the internet and set up a website. He inspired many others," he said, adding that during the COVID pandemic, he was active in dispelling myths and creating public awareness by publishing scientific information in news media and social media.

 

Responding to an audience question regarding whether a story is required to explain a photograph, veteran photojournalist Yajna said, “A single shot photo is a work of art and should speak for itself. But a photojournalist or a photostory teller needs to build a context around the single or multiple photos to reach out to the viewers.”

 

Prakash Braggs explained the ‘less is more’ concept in photography. "It’s not about what you include in the photo, but what you leave out," he said.

 

The Editorial Coordinator of the project, Shalmali Shetty, spoke about the editorial journey and introduced the participants and their works. She also moderated an open house discussion between Prakash Braggs and Yajna and the participants.

 

 

Sharvani Bhat welcomed the gathering. Subhas Chandra Basu, convener of the INTACH Mangalore Chapter, gave the introductory note. Nemiraj Shetty gave a vote of thanks.

About ‘Under 30 Photo Story Contest’

The ‘Under 30 Photo Story Contest’ was a unique talent competition for young photographers, photojournalists, and writers between the ages of 16 and 30. The contestants were required to submit a series of photographs along with stories or essays on themes like people, places, nature and wildlife, history, sports, food and culture, predominantly of the Karavali region which comprises Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Malnad (Kodagu, Hassan, Shimoga, and Chikmagalur) and Kasaragod.

The award is instituted in the name of Dr. Krishna Mohan (popularly known as ‘Krishi’), a surgeon and an eminent photographer of Moodabidri, who mentored hundreds of students and photographers. He was also a science enthusiast, blogger, trekker, nature lover, and wildlife conservationist. He met an untimely demise on January 11, 2022.
