The final year students of the Electronics and Communication department of NITTE Engineering College have invented a new device called “Digital Electronic Power Meter.”
Besides having the facilities of similar devices available in the market, this device can transfer meter readings directly to MESCOM via Global System for Mobile (GSM).
In addition, the device can prevent stealing of electricity. Any attempts of power theft would result in a message being sent to MESCOM via GSM. Besides, MESCOM can disconnect the power supplies of those people who fail to pay their bills on time. MESCOM can also easily disconnect the lines of those who use more electricity than they are supposed to.
The new device was invented by Sanath Kumar Pande, Nishanth S. Shetty, Sudhir Kumar Nayak, and Prem Paundyal under the guidance of Dr. M. K. Parashuram, the head of the Electronics and Communication department, and Suresh M. Rao. The Karnataka State Science and Technology Mandal gave the team the “Best Project” award in appreciation for their hard work and dedication.
M. Vinay Hegde, the head of the college, and Dr. S. Y. Kulkarni, the principal, lauded the team for their inventive efforts.
