Mangaluru, Oct 18, 2022: Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital in association with the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) organized a two-day national level Cardiac continued medical education (CME) at Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangalore on October 15th – October 16th.
The CME was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor NITTE Deemed to be University. Padma Vibhushan Dr.M.S.Valiathan, Padma Shri Dr.K.M.Cherian were the chief guests and were honoured and felicitated at the inaugural ceremony.
Padma Shri Dr.K.M.Cherian delivered the keynote address in which he reminisced about his early days in the field of medicine, at K.M.C Manipal and Mangalore and his source of inspiration to become a cardiovascular thoracic surgeon, Dr.S.R.Ullal. He went on to describe his journey in the field of Cardiovascular thoracic surgery with his experiences at various eminent centres in Australia and rest of the world. He also described his immense interest in the field of research and how it remained a difficult goal to achieve due to the lack of funding and the stringent license rules. Padma Shri Dr.K.M.Cherian’s talk was a source of inspiration to all the delegates at the CME, especially the budding cardiovascular thoracic surgeons.
The occasion was graced by the presence of Padma Vibhushan Dr.M.S.Valiathan, Former Director of Sree Chithra Tirunal Institute Of Medical Sciences, Thiruvananthapuram and Vice Chancellor of MAHE. He was the prime force behind the Indian Made TTK Chithra Heart Valve, which has been implanted in over 1 Lakh patients at low cost with excellent results.
Delegates from all over India attended the CME in good number.
Vice Chancellor Prof (Dr.) Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, Dr.Z.S.Meharwal, President of the IACTS, Dr.C.S.Hiremath, secretary of the IACTS and Dr. A.G.Jayakrishnan, organizing secretary of the IACTS Mid-term Cardiac CME were the other dignitaries on the Dias. Prof. (Dr.) P.S.Prakash, Dean, K.S.Hegde Medical Academy, Dr.Jayaprakash Shetty K. Vice-Dean (Admin), K.S.Hegde Medical Academy, Dr.Sumalatha R.Shetty, Medical Superintendent, Col.G.Jaculin Elizabeth, Nursing Superintendent were the guests of honour.
The inaugural ceremony was followed by didactic sessions of talks by speakers from all around India. It is interesting to note that this is the first time a national level CME of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons has taken place in Mangalore.
Dr.A.G.Jayakrishnan, H.O.D, Dr.M.Gopalakrishnan, Professor, Dr. Nareshchand Hegde H, Associate Professor, Dr.Anup H.S. Assistant Professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery (CTVS) of the Justice K.S.Hegde Charitable Hosptial, Deralakatte, Mangalore organized the CME.
