Mangalore, Feb 8, 2014: The Sixth Netravathi Phalguni Jodukere Kambala kicked off at the Kambala fields at Pilikula Nisargadhama in the outskirts of the city on February 8, Saturday. The annual event is being hosted by the District Administration and Dr Shivaram Karanth Pilikula Nisargadhama. Over 150 pairs of buffaloes are likely to take part in the Kambala this year.
Several dignitaries including AB Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Nazeer, MUDA Commissioner, JR Lobo, MLA of Mangalore South, S Krishnamurthi, Director of Pilikula, Rajavarma Ballal, President of Canara Bus Operators’ Association and T Subbayya Shetty, Managing Director of Shettars Consultants, formally inaugurated the Kambala by lighting the traditional lamp.
Earlier the dignitaries arrived at the inaugural venue along with a pair of buffaloes which were in waiting in front of the Pilikula Guttu House. The Kambala was declared open after flagging off the first pair of buffaloes which ran on the slush track. The winners will be awarded with gold coins.
