Mangalore Dec 21, 2012 : A delegation of Karavali Jeevanadi-Netravathi Rakshana Samithi led by former Suratkal MLA Vijaykumar Shetty met Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar in Bangalore and submitted a memorandum urging him to drop the Netravathi river diversion project.
The delegation tried to convince the Chief Minister of the fact that any attempt to divert Netravathi river to supply water to Kolar, Chikkaballapur and other nine districts, would be detrimental to the interests of the coastal districts as well as the Western Ghats.
The memorandum pointed out that the project implementation was technically unfeasible and added the feasibility report had made no mention of the adverse consequences of the project on the flora and fauna and the rich bio-diversity of the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats.
The delegation urged the Chief Minister to understand the seriousness of the matter and also pointed out that the project has been opposed by elected representatives of the coastal district cutting across party lines.
The delegation also included PV Mohan, AICC Member, Dennis D’Silva and Durgaprasad Rao.
