Mangaluru, September 28, 2024: Nitte (Deemed to be University) has been granted a patent (Patent No 550586) for “Calibrated base former for preparation of study casts in Dentistry” The inventors are: Dr. Ravi M.S; Dr. Nithin Kumar; Dr. Murali P.S; Mr. Aneesh Jose; Dr. Jacob Thomas; Dr. Harnoor Dhillon from the A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences. A dental study cast is a replica of the patient’s upper and lower teeth and supporting tissues. They can be used for diagnostic purposes.
The device developed by the inventors is able to accurately position the base formers for upper and lower dental models and it is easy and convenient for the user to prepare the study casts in scientifically accepted design with appropriate dimension. The base for the study casts needs to be formed at a specific standardised method wherein all three planes of space are considered; the sagittal, vertical and transverse relationship should be as per the guidelines so the dental occlusion may be studied accurately in all three dimensions. The patented device helps dentists to easily and conveniently position the base formers so that the dental casts can be oriented accurately.
