Mangaluru, April 28, 2025: No decision has been taken yet on revoking suspension of 18 BJP MLAs for their unruly behaviour during the discussion on the Finance Bill on the last day of Budget session in the Legislative Assembly, Speaker U.T. Khader said in Mangaluru on Sunday.

Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Khader said the 18 MLAs were suspended for six months from the Legislative Assembly. They have also been barred from attending meetings of Legislative Assembly committees, which are extension of the Legislative Assembly. The action was taken to make legislators realise their mistake of behaving in an uncivilised manner in the Legislative Assembly.

“The action to suspend 18 MLAs was taken in the Legislative Assembly. I cannot independently decide on revoking their suspension. Deliberations are on. No decision has been taken yet on revoking their suspension,” he said. If the MLAs feel that the suspension is not correct, they are free to approach the court, he added.

Mr. Khader said five MLAs had filed a petition questioning Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja’s statements made outside the Assembly where he had criticised Mr. Khader over the suspension. “Last week I referred this petition to the Committee on Privileges. The committee will deliberate upon it,” he said.
