Only postgraduates in political science, law can teach Indian Constitution, constitutional values subjects: MU

Mangaluru, March 26, 2025: Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University P.L. Dharma on Tuesday asked principals to ensure that only postgraduates in political science and law teach Indian Constitution/constitutional values subjects in colleges.

Speaking at the academic council meeting of the university held online, the Vice-Chancellor said that the university will send a circular to colleges on the same soon.

Earlier, Jayaraj Ameen, professor of political science, drew the attention of the council that non-postgraduates in political science and law taught those subjects in some colleges. It is not correct and responsible persons should teach the subjects, he said.

The Vice-Chancellor said that Indian Constitution/constitutional values subjects should not be taught only for the sake of teaching in a casual manner. There should be no disregard while teaching those subjects.

Pension benefits

In his introductory remarks the Vice-Chancellor said the government has released ₹11.3 crore to the university towards pension benefits of 24 teaching and non-teaching staff who retired during 2023-24.

Name changed

The council agreed to re-name ‘Kunda Kannada Adhyayana Peetha’ (study chair) as ‘Kundapura Kannada Adhyayana Peetha’ which will be set up at the university. It approved the draft statute relating to the institution of ‘Kundapura Kannada Adhyayana Peetha’ in Mangalore University.’

The draft read that the State government has approved the proposal of establishing the ‘Kundapura Kannada Adhyayana Peetha’ at the university to promote the interest of Kundapura Kannada language, culture and heritage and has also sanctioned ₹50 lakh for the purpose on July 11, 2024.

It said that Kunda Kannada or Kundapura Kannada is a regional language mainly spoken by several communities in Byndoor, Kundapur, Brahmavar, Udupi, and Hebri taluks of Udupi district. It is a dialect of Kannada language. Kundapura Kannada has its own literature, folklore culture and history.

The language is facing the threat of extinction due to various social, cultural, linguistic and other factors, it said

‘Heartfulness chair’

The council approved revised draft statute relating to the establishment of ‘Heartfulness chair’ by Sahaj Marg Spirituality Foundation at the university.

The chair will be set up with an endowment of ₹25 lakh by the foundation. The chair will have no financial support either by the university or the government. Its activities will be taken up from the accrued interest. Its main objective is to engage in studies, research, publication and conduct seminars on spiritual subjects. It is also to create awareness on spiritual and moral attitudes.
