Mangalore, Nov 2, 2013: The participants of the 14th annual goodu deepa competition organized by TV channel Namma Kudla at Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple on Nov 1, Friday, made and exhibited over 500 goodu deepas. 


The event was organized with the purpose of keeping alive traditions associated with Diwali and to give the people of Mangalore a chance to exhibit their talents.

MCC Commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde inaugurated the event at Santhoshi Kala Mantap, while Former state minister Krishna J Palemar presided over the event.


Many people participated in the contest and created attractive goodu deepas out of colored paper, bamboo, and colored lights in the traditional, modern, and unique categories. The winners of the first and the second prizes received a gold medal each. 25 consolation prizes were also given for each category.


Former Union Minister B Janardhana Poojary presided over the valedictory ceremony held in the evening and Winners in all the three categories including traditional, modern, and unique were given gold coins.


On the same occasion, the ‘Namma Tuluver Award 2013’ was conferred on M Sadananda Shetty, chairman of Shridevi Educational Institution, while the ‘Namma Kudla Award 2013’ was conferred on Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alvas Educational Institution; and ‘Multifaceted Talent Award’ was given to Shreyank S Kotian, student of St Aloysius College.


Harish Karkera, Leelaksha Karkera, Mohan Karkera, Suresh Karkera, H S Sairam, Padmaraj, Dr B G Suvarna, Dakshina Kannada co-operative milk producers union  director Dr Satyanaraya Rao, were present during the inaugural ceremony.


Navneet Shetty Kadri, Bhaskar Rai Kukkuvalli and Ramesh Kotian compered the programme
