Naik was arrested on June 3, 2019, for demanding a Rs.9,000 bribe related to a 9/11 registration. The case was registered under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, following a trap operation by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Mangaluru.

After a trial (Special Case No. 170/2020), the court ruled that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional one-month imprisonment. Inspector Shyam Sundar HM led the investigation, and Ravindra Munnipadi, Special Public Prosecutor for Karnataka Lokayukta, represented the government.

The judgment is viewed as a critical step in the fight against corruption in Dakshina Kannada.
