Mangalore, Dec 14: The Popular Front of India (PFI) organized a protest in front of the DC office against police atrocities.

PFI District President Anwar Sadath said in his protest speech that a team led by Bantwal Circle Inspector Nanjundegowda has arrested 9 PFI members on grounds of conspiring to kill a Hindu leader. The arrested are Nawaz, Ashraf, Naushad, Ansar, Rasheed, Noorul Amina, Saifulla, and Shareef, who were on their way to Mysore on Dec 11 to participate in a state-level PFI meeting when they were nabbed by the police in Kaikamba.

Revealing further details, he said that the Bantwal police said that they will be allowed to go free after interrogation, but did not release them even after 24 hours. When enquired, they said that the nine cannot be released when the Puttur Samajotsava was going on. Now, the police seem to have altered the case completely and charged the nine for conspiring to kill a Hindutva activist, said Sadath, adding that the PFI strongly condemns this illegal act and protests against it.

Venkatesh Prasanna of the District Crime Intelligence Bureau is in charge of the case at present, he explained and alleged that Prasanna is notorious for torturing the innocent, especially Muslim youth. Stating that Prasanna has been booked for various cases such as association with criminals on rowdy sheets and ransom collection, he urged the authorities concerned to suspend him as quickly as possible.

Abdul Razak delivered the presidential address, and Akbar Ali delivered the welcome address. Udupi District President Neemath Ali and P. B. D’Sa of PUCL were also present.
