Mangaluru, December 31, 2024: Thumb and finger sucking is a common habit among children in their early years, typically disappearing between the ages of two and four. However, when the habit persists beyond this period, it can lead to a range of dental and oral health issues, including uneven teeth, protruding teeth, complications with the roof of the mouth, and even speech difficulties.
Recognizing the need to address this concern, a team of researchers from the A B Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences (ABSMIDS), Nitte (Deemed to be University), Mangalore, has developed an innovative solution. Dr. Raghavendra Shetty, Dr. Manoj Shetty, and Dr. N. Sridhar Shetty have designed a unique device named the “Elbow Guard,” aimed at preventing thumb and finger sucking in children.
The invention has garnered significant recognition, recently receiving a patent from the Patent Office, Government of India. This milestone highlights the ingenuity and impact of the device in promoting healthier dental habits among children.
Congratulations to the inventors for their remarkable achievement, which stands as a testament to their dedication to advancing pediatric oral health care.
