Udupi, Jan 13: Seer of Pejawar Mutt Shri Vishwesha Tirtha Shripada said that the Nagarjuna Company has not publicized any document related to its thermal power project in Nandikur although it had assured that it would during a meeting organized to discuss the project last month.
Referring to the case of Bhageerathi Prabhu who was allegedly assaulted by the manager of the company, the seer said that development work must not adversely affect the lives of common people. He said that he would investigate the legal aspects of the project irrespective of the fact that most of the disputes related to it are already in Court. The Seer said that he would work for the welfare of the victims whose land has been grabbed forcibly by the company.
The company has not publicized relevant documents. Ananth Kumar and Dr V S Acharya, the home minister, have promised to handle the matter in order to prevent environmental hazards. They have also promised adequate compensation to the people who have lost their property. The Seer said that, in case the home minister and Ananth Kumar fail to keep their promises, he would take the required steps to see that justice is done to these people. The Seer urged that a meeting must be held in order to discuss various disadvantages to the environment because of the establishment of this plant.
Bhageerathi Prabhu, who teaches at an elementary school, was allegedly assaulted by David D’Souza, the manager of the company, when she resisted the construction of the ash pond near her agricultural land. The pond will affect the entire area. Only the compound walls serve as blocks to the flowing water. She accused the police of supporting the company. When she approached the police station to register a case, they told the manager to file a counter case against her. Currently, the case pertaining to her land is in court, she informed.
