Petition filed in High Court seeking fresh probe into Sowjanya case

Mangaluru, Aug 29, 2023: The Regional Director of the Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project Sheenappa and another person named Nandeesh Kumar Jain have filed a petition in the State High Court seeking to direct the state government to order a re-investigation into the Sowjanya rape and murder case that took place eleven years ago.
The petition has also urged for legal action against activist Mahesh Shetty Timarody and has accused him of making abusive statements against Dharmasthala Shrine.
It may be recalled here that Thimarody has been leading a series of protests not only in the district but also in other parts of the state seeking re-investigation into the case.
The petition has named the Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary of Home Department as well as Mahesh Shetty Thimarody and six others as respondents.
The Sowjanya rape and murder case took place in October, 2012. Sowjanya, a 17 year old girl who was studying at a college in Ujire was returning home on October 9 when she was kidnapped. She was found murdered the next day.
