Pilgrims of Hope: Mangalore Diocese marks epiphany with Solemn Eucharistic Procession

Mangaluru, January 6, 2025: The Catholic Diocese of Mangalore witnessed a profound expression of faith and devotion as thousands of Catholics from various parishes united for a grand Eucharistic procession on Sunday, January 5, 2025. The event, held in observance of the Feast of the Epiphany, began at Milagres Church and culminated at Rosario Cathedral, qreflecting the spiritual fervour of the faithful and unity in prayer.

The event commenced with a solemn Eucharistic celebration at Milagres Church, presided over by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore. The feast, also known as the Epiphany or Three Kings’ Day, commemorates the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as symbolised by the visit of the Magi.

In his homily on the Feast of the Epiphany, the Bishop highlighted the profound symbolism of the journey of the Three Kings, emphasizing its relevance to our spiritual lives. "The Magi’s journey in search of the truth marks the beginning of our journey of hope—a hope that finds its fulfillment in Jesus, the true light of the world," he said. Reflecting on the Magi’s unwavering faith and humility, he urged the faithful to seek Christ as the ultimate truth and allow His light to guide their lives. The Bishop also underscored the significance of sharing this light with others, as the Magi did upon returning to their lands, making the Feast not only a celebration of revelation but also a call to mission.

The Eucharistic procession, which began after the mass, was a visual and spiritual journey. The Blessed Sacrament, carried on a beautifully adorned vehicle, passed through key city locations including Hampankatta, Clock Tower Circle, A.B. Shetty Circle, and Nehru Circle, before culminating at Rosario Cathedral. The faithful, accompanied by musical bands and choir groups, sang hymns of praise, creating an atmosphere of solemnity and devotion. The participants ensured the procession was orderly and minimally disruptive to the general public.

At the Rosario Cathedral Grounds, the congregation gathered for adoration and reflection on the Word of God. Rev. Fr Victor D’Mello, Parish Priest of Paneer Church, preached a reflective sermon on the theme of the Year of Jubilee 2025: “Hope Does Not Disappoint Us.” Emphasising the sustaining power of the Eucharist and the Scriptures, he said, “Amid life’s hardships, failures, and sickness, we are called to find the sources of hope in the Eucharist and the Word of God. Let us be bearers of hope, uplifting those in despair.”

The final ceremony at Rosario Cathedral was thoughtfully coordinated by Rev. Fr Vijay Machado, Director of Mangala Jyothi Liturgical Centre along with Rev. Dr Praveen Leo Lasrado, Secretary of the Catholic Board of Education.

Bishop Saldanha extended heartfelt gratitude to all the participants, organisers, and volunteers for their dedication, which contributed to the success of the event.

The Eucharistic procession on the Feast of the Epiphany was a powerful testament to the faith and unity of the Catholic community in Mangalore, inspiring all to live as bearers of Christ’s light in the world.
