Mangalore, January 9: During a raid conducted on Jan 9, Saturday, Amit Singh, the under-assistant superintendent of police, confiscated diesel and kerosene worth Rs 1.75 lakh, which was stored illegally near Gorigudda Ration Store, Valencia, within the jurisdiction of Mangalore South (Pandeshwar) Police.
Alvin Mascarenhas, the owner of a ration store in Gorigudda, owns the kerosene and diesel, which was stored illegally in a building next to the store. Approximately 1000 litres of diesel and 5000 litres of kerosene was stored in tanks and barrels.
The fuel was illegally transported via tankers with the knowledge and consent of Alvin Mascarenhas. The illegal diesel was later mixed with kerosene after treating it with wood and cement in order to change its color. Later, it was sold at the ration store at higher rates under the label of white kerosene. Since the stock of kerosene stored was found to be much more than that legally supplied by the food and civil supplies department, it is considered to be illegal, informed police sources.
The Pandeshwar Police have confiscated barrels filled with fuel, electric motors, and tanks. Inspector Tilak Chandra and Sub-inspector Ramakrishna are currently conducting investigations.
