Private bus drivers clash in broad daylight, cause public outrage in Mangaluru

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, October 11, 2024: Reckless behavior among private bus drivers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts is not a new issue. For years, hundreds of private buses have operated with little regard for transportation regulations, and authorities have largely failed to take action despite being aware of the problem.

Recently, a disturbing incident in Mangaluru highlighted the escalating misconduct of private bus staff. Two drivers and conductors engaged in a violent brawl on a busy road, with passengers still on board, drawing widespread public outrage.

The altercation occurred between the crews of two private buses on the Vittal-Mangaluru route. While on duty, the drivers and conductors became embroiled in a physical fight, during which one individual brandished a screwdriver as a weapon. The scuffle was recorded on the bus’s CCTV, showcasing the rowdy behavior of the staff.

Witnesses reported that the confrontation began over a disagreement related to spitting, which quickly escalated into violence. Staff from one bus boarded the other, forcibly dragged out the conductor, and attempted to stab him in front of frightened passengers.

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as passengers frequently report aggressive and reckless conduct from private bus drivers and conductors. Many drivers speed recklessly, while others intimidate passengers, creating an unsafe environment. Despite these growing concerns, authorities, including the Regional Transport Office (RTO), seem to be ignoring the issue, much to the public’s frustration.

As misconduct among private bus staff continues to rise, many passengers are becoming hesitant to use these services. Public dissatisfaction with police and RTO officials is mounting, with accusations of negligence and claims that their inaction has emboldened the unruly behavior of private bus employees.
